Demi Lovato voices Smurfette in "Get Smurfy"

15 Jun – Singer-actress Demi Lovato is set to voice the only female blue character in the world of Smurfs.

Sony Pictures announced recently that the "Camp Rock" star will be taking over as the voice of Smurfette, who was voiced by Katy Perry in the first two movies.

Joining Lovato as part of the main cast are Emmy winner Mandy Patinkin, who will be voicing Papa Smurf, and Emmy-nominated "The Office" actor Rainn Wilson, who will be voicing Smurf nemesis, Gargamel.

Also according to the same press release, the fully computer-animated feature – which was often referred to as "The Smurfs 3" – is now officially titled "Get Smurfy".

Directed by Kelly Asbury, this will be the third "Smurfs" movie from Sony, but the first that is not a live action and computer-animated hybrid like 2011's "The Smurfs" and 2013's "The Smurfs 2", both starring Neil Patrick Harris as the live-action lead.

The first and second movie made USD563.7 million and USD347.5 million global gross, respectively, according to Box Office Mojo stats. Neither garnered highly positive reviews but "The Smurfs 2" was still popular enough to get a Malay-dubbed version in Malaysian cinemas.

The third movie will follow Smurfette along with her brothers as they search for the fabled Smurfs village before Gargamel the Evil Wizard finds it first. The mysteries and origins of the small blue creatures who live in mushroom-shaped houses will also be unveiled in the movie, including the reason why there are 99 boys and only one girl.

"Get Smurfy" gets into cinemas globally on 31 March 2017.
